I ordered a commercial wired power supply. Its on amazon for $14 with free prime delivery. I recieved it today (along with a battery finally) and wired it in parallel to the battery cable.

Took just a few seconds to solder a good connection and seems to work perfectly. The unit has over-current shutout and an led to indicate power. The reviews seems good but I guess I'll know in a few months if its a good solution.

Cool :) Very useful addition to the product!

Just so everybody's aware, we do sell a DC-DC Power adapter on our store - it clips to the battery leads and plugs into the USB Power port of the Pi. Solderless solution for those who are not able.

I actually saw that and wanted to order it as a known working solution, but the store is showing "out of stock".

Sorry about that - we actually do have stock, forgot to update it.

Just a note: You can always order from our site, even if it's "Out of Stock" and we will fulfill ASAP.

So I finally got around to powering my Raspberry Pi via that alarm battery today. Only a little over a year after I asked the question. Thanks for giving such great instructions on how to do it. I have a very limited background with electronics, but I find it fascinating, and even once in a while I'm willing to try, and today I did so with success. I don't have shrink rap to put around the buck device, would it be OK to rap it lightly in electrical tape?

Congrats..!

Yes, I wrapped mine in clear packing tape (breathable) so I can see it if need be. It's stuffed in the alarm box, so who cares how pretty.. :D

How about a spare car charger?

Depends on what the car charger "is" ... if it produces a solid 12v signal you can attach a buck-boost to to produce 5v 3amp then it would work I think.
